Treehouse Hotels of the World
David Bryce contributed this guest post. He is a blogger and traveler “who gets stoked when he finds other ‘birds of a feather’ in the treehouse world.” When he’s not writing or globe-trotting, you can generally find him hitting up his local golf course or “testing” new bourbons on the market.
Living in the trees is no longer “for the birds.” Or for that matter, for the kids. Adults are clamoring for what once was thought to be more or less a child’s play area. Treehouse hotels are the hippest thing happening in the housing world. If you want to give treetop living a test-run with a sky-high vacation, check out some of these luxurious accommodations across the globe:
South Africa
The Tsala Treetop Lodge, in South Africa’s Plettenberg Bay region, has ten private treehouse suites. Outfitted with luxuries like infinity pools, floor-to-ceiling windows for breathtaking views, log fireplaces and secluded decks and walkways. This is a beautiful place from which to explore the Western Cape.
Zambia
Just upstream from Victoria Falls is the Tongabezi treehouse, the sole tree-top lodging at the posh safari lodge along the Zambezi River in Livingstone, Zambia. The riverside views are expansive, set amidst the boughs of an ebony tree, and a canopied bed and claw foot tub sweeten the deal.
Brazil
Located right outside Manaus, Brazil, the Ariau Amazon Towers Hotel is one of the largest commercial treehouse hotels in the world. Featuring a “penthouse” of sorts named the “Tarzan House,” the resort features private balconies, pool, and Jacuzzi, plus ten miles of wooden catwalks through the rainforest and two 150-foot tall observation towers for jungle viewing.
Costa Rica
The sustainable structures of Tree House Lodge in Limon, Costa Rica were built from fallen tropical hardwood trees and are solar-powered. Here, 100-year old trees wind their way throughout the bungalows and you’re surrounded by lush jungle, but the real indulgence is the 10-acre coastline just a skip and a hop away from the jungle cottages.
More treehouse hotels:
Sweden
For those who want to experience a treetop vacation, but lean more towards futuristic extravagances rather than rustic luxury, the Treehotel in Harads, Sweden is for you. Featuring a variety of high-tech accommodations, including a ‘floating’ mirrored cube, a 1950’s-style UFO and a treetop sauna, this place is one of a kind.
England
If creature comforts are your thing, the treehouses of Chewton Glen in Hampshire, England have heated timber and marble floors, delivered meals and access to spa treatments. Secluded, peaceful and romantic, the wooded valley can be viewed from panoramic windows.
Australia
The Hinchinbrook Island Resort on Hinchinbrook Island in Australia is a luxury of a different sort. Rural accommodations can be pretty rugged, but being located off the grid can be one of the biggest luxuries of all. The lush scenery surrounding these rainforest island treehouses is absolutely gorgeous – and totally visible from the Orchid Beach lounge, bar or pool.
Jamaica
Along a private shoreline wrapped around a sparkling blue lagoon is the Kanopi House, a Jamaican treehouse retreat located right outside of Port Antonio. Here, 100-foot banyan trees provide the charming setting for these luxury lodges that once drew extravagant guests such as Ian Flemming and Errol Flynn.
U. S. treehouse hotels
Though this list is international, I’ve heard of many enchanting stateside treetop hotelss, as well. There are even a few in my own region, located not too far from the cozy Branson cabins, where I do much of my writing. Do you have favorite U.S. treehouse hotels? Leave a comment and let us know!
